Le narrateur anonyme de ce monologue cinglant gît seul, accablé par une puissante fièvre, dans une chambre d'hôtel morne dans un pays pauvre. Une exécution politique semble prête à se dérouler au même moment. Loin du confort futile de son existence, il lutte avec sa mémoire et sa conscience, ébranlées par la misère et la détresse qui l'entourent. Alors quil plonge en ses souvenirs, il agonise face à sa responsabilité envers les plus dépourvus de ce monde. Il en arrive au constat impitoyable que la rectitude politique est coupable elle-même, si aucune action nest entreprise. Mais jusquà quel point est-il sincère et jusquà quel point n'est-il pas en proie à un délire exacerbé par la fièvre et par un sentiment aigu de culpabilité ? |
